The three founding slots

We're Looking for Three Specific Types of Organizations

Each slot is different because each represents a different use case, a different community, a different set of stakes. Together they prove FOLKMOOT works across contexts.

Founding Slot · 1 of 3
Union Locals & Labor Councils

High-stakes votes where management interference is a documented concern. You need results your members can independently verify. You understand adversarial conditions.

Contract ratification
Strike authorization
Officer elections
Grievance prioritization
Budget allocation votes
Founding Slot · 2 of 3
Tenant Associations & Housing Cooperatives

Communities with members who can't easily access official elections — unstable addresses, no government ID, history of voter roll removal. FOLKMOOT was built for exactly this.

Rent strike / collective action vote
Building representative elections
Repair prioritization
Coop bylaw changes
Lease negotiation positions
Founding Slot · 3 of 3
Neighborhood Councils & Mutual Aid Networks

Direct democracy at the block level. Diverse ages, languages, tech literacy levels. This slot proves FOLKMOOT works for everyone — not just people who are comfortable with technology.

Resource allocation
Community priorities
Garden / space decisions
Council member elections
Emergency fund deployment
What we need from you

Requirements for Pilot Organizations

What we're looking for
  • An existing community with an established trust network — at least 20 active members
  • At least one real decision coming up in the next 3 months that the community needs to vote on
  • One technically capable point of contact who can spend ~4 hours on setup
  • Willingness to provide honest feedback — including when things don't work
  • Agreement to let us tell your story (anonymized if you prefer) after the pilot
  • Warm introduction from someone we know, OR a compelling direct application
What we're NOT requiring
  • Any money — the pilot is completely free
  • A nonprofit or legal entity — informal community organizations are welcome
  • Technical expertise beyond one person who can follow setup instructions
  • Any specific size — we've designed for 20 to 2,000 members
  • A formal political alignment — we work with labor, tenant, mutual aid, faith, and neighborhood organizations across political contexts
  • Permission from any government authority — that's the whole point
On the warm introduction: We prioritize organizations we can reach through existing trusted relationships — existing WOPR Foundation mutual aid connections, organizer networks, union contacts. If you don't have a connection into our network, apply anyway and explain your context. We read every application.
What pilot organizations receive

What We Provide to Founding Pilots

[>_]
Full Setup Support

We configure FOLKMOOT for your organization, walk your tech contact through the setup, and run a test election before the real one. You won't be doing this alone.

[>>]
Direct Line to Development

A dedicated Matrix channel with the FOLKMOOT development team. Real people who will respond. Not a ticketing system.

[=:]
Member Onboarding Materials

Printable member guides in English and Spanish. A short explainer video tailored for your organization type. QR codes. Everything you need to get your members registered.

[##]
Dedicated Trustee Setup

We walk your chosen trustees through the threshold key ceremony — how to hold and use their decryption key shares. This is the most important part and we do it with you live.

[||]
Post-Election Verification Walk

After your election, we walk you and any interested members through the independent verification process — showing exactly how to confirm the results are correct.

[<>]
Input on the Roadmap

Founding pilots get direct input into what gets built next. Your organization's experience shapes FOLKMOOT for every community that comes after you.

What to expect

Pilot Program Timeline

1
Week 1–4 after selection
Onboarding and Setup

We configure your FOLKMOOT instance, create your election namespace, set up your admin credentials through Authentik SSO, and walk through the trustee key ceremony with your 3–5 designated trustees. Your tech contact gets a guided tour of the admin dashboard.

2
Week 2–4 after selection
Member Registration Drive

You distribute the FOLKMOOT registration QR codes and member guides to your community. We recommend doing this at an existing meeting so you can explain the vouching process in person. Target: get at least 80% of your eligible voters registered before the first election opens.

3
Week 4–6 after selection
Test Election

Run a low-stakes test election before the real one. A fun, inconsequential vote — best pizza topping, next meeting time, whatever. This surfaces any technical issues and gets your members comfortable with the interface before the vote that matters.

4
Month 2–3 after selection
First Real Election

Your real decision goes to a vote. We are on standby during the voting window. After the election closes, your trustees run the threshold decryption ceremony together. Results post to the public bulletin board. We walk your members through verification.

5
Month 3 after selection
Retrospective and Feedback

A structured conversation with your leadership about what worked, what was confusing, what broke, and what you wish existed. This feedback directly shapes the platform before public launch. With your permission, we document your story for the public launch.

Apply for the Founding Cohort

We read every application personally. There is no algorithm deciding this. Tell us who you are and what you're trying to decide.

This form submits to [email protected] via encrypted email. We will respond within 5 business days. We may ask follow-up questions before deciding. We are selecting 3 organizations — we will be honest with every applicant about our decision.

We recommend a personal email, not organizational if possible

The more specific, the better. "Contract ratification vote in March" is better than "union stuff."

Not required — direct applications are welcome. Honesty helps.
